New Helicopters for Victoria Police

Updated: Nov 13, 2020

In June - July, Victoria Police welcomed three new helicopters. The three AgustaWestland AW139 are registered as VH-PVO, VH-PVQ and VH-PVR. I captured all three of them in the last few weeks at Essendon Airport.

The AW139 are provided by StarFlight who aids in the operation of these aircraft. These choppers feature advance infra-red and mapping systems. Airwing Inspector Craig Shepherd stated that these helicopters are the "envy of many police forces around the world", highlighting the advanced camera systems these aircraft are fitted with.

The helicopters are capable of reaching speeds up to 250km/h and can be airborne for 1000 kilometres without needing to land. The predecessor, Eurocopter AS365N3 Dauphin, could only seat two people in the cabin, however, the new aircraft have capacity for eight.

Victoria Police Airwing also received a fixed-wing Beechcraft King Air 350ER, which I aim to photograph soon.
